If you are like 70% of U.S. households, you have either a dog or a cat in your home. Besides bringing us joy and companionship and feeling like members of our families, pets have been shown to provide several health benefits, including reducing blood pressure and heart rate when we pet them. Pets have even been associated with improved longevity among heart attacks survivors.
Unfortunately, our furry companions can also sometimes affect our health in negative ways. Did you know 10-15% of the population is allergic to animals and about 1/3 of us live with a pet we are allergic to? Congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, wheezing, rashes, and sneezing are some examples of common allergic reactions to pets. People with asthma are particularly prone to respiratory problems when they are exposed to pet allergens.
